Dear Unity Jane,

From the moment I suspected you were coming, I have been thankful for you. I enjoyed growing big and slow and nesty and feeling you move inside me. You surprised us by showing up before we'd had a chance to get diapers, but I know how you felt- I couldn't wait to meet you too. I am thankful that we were able to have a healthy out-of-hospital birth, with our midwife and Chris and Megan, and I am so glad that you waited for Grandma Cindy to show up before you made your grand arrival. As the news of your immpending arrival spread, I was consistantly gratified by all of the help and support that came to us from friends and family and friends of family and that only increased when you were born. Do you have any idea how many people love you? (It's a lot!)
It has been so amazing watching your personality emerge as you learn and explore the world. You've always been social, making friends on the bus and jumping right in to playgroups. You love music and dancing and books, pasta shells and raisins and "snack" (crackers.) You are very aware of what's going on around you, pointing out every doggie and bird, every loud siren and noisy car. Lately, you have been very tuned in to emotions, talking about "baby sad" and "baby laughing". You love being tickled under your chin, and sitting on your papa's chest and washing your hands. You love dance parties with your mama and picking out your own clothes and trying on other people's shoes.
You've kept us up and thrown up on us and asked us to read "Wow, City" six hundred times in a row, and much to your father's dismay, you love Abba, but we wouldn't have it any other way. You've got your own thoughts and joys and opinions and we love hearing about them. I can't wait to see what else you have to tell us. From the moment I knew of you, you've changed me baby. I can't imagine life without you.

Thank you.

Love,
your mama.

Unity, that is one special Mama you have! I know she will find many heartfelt ways to show you her love all of her life. Here are some of my thoughts. I too am most thankful that you waited to allow me to be there to welcome you into this world. As you grow you will definitely have your own story to tell, but already you are most wonderful indeed and your story, though unique, seems familiar to me too. Your Mama was just as verbal, friendly and engaged in the world as you are at this age. Whatever paths you take, I know you will continue to amaze your parents and help them to see the world through different eyes. I am thankful that's what your Mama and Uncle Michael did for me as they were growing up and that they still do it today. I love how they have rejected the materialism of society, live simply and concentrate on what is truly important in life. I love how they don't stop at meeting their own personal needs and wants, but reach beyond that to a larger focus on helping others and taking a deep interest in global issues. Your parents are well-read, smart, kind and loving people. I am thankful they are such wonderful role models for you and I see those qualities developing in you already. You will find your own ways to make them shine. You will delight and challenge your parents as you grow and will infuse their lives with your special love. I know that strong bond you have now with them will grow ever stronger. Though it seems impossible that there could be anything beyond this, the love just keeps getting deeper from the shared experiences that come with every passing year. I am thankful for your Mama, your Papa and YOU. I am thankful for the privilege it is to be your Mama and Uncle Michael's mother and now to be your grandmother too. Love is truly what life is all about. I am thankful that your world is filled with an abundance of it.
