Lavender, Marjoram & Lemon balm

Things sure are busy around here. We harvested some of the garden herbs on Tuesday.

After many hours spent cleaning them up and bundling, they are now drying in the basement.

Garlic Scapes

Garlic scapes are the flowers which are produced by hardneck garlic in the summer. Since garlic mainly reproduces asexually, the flowers almost never produce true garlic seed. Instead they are cut off from the plant so that it can concentrate its energies on producing a large bulb.

The scapes are great, but rarely used in the kitchen. They have a mild garlic flavor and you can fry or grill them like asparagus. I have been using them to make a garlic scape pesto, which I then freeze.

We planted 70 cloves of hardneck garlic this year, so we've had a lot of scapes. Too bad that Polly's pregnancy makes garlic smell awful! We're going to have to find some way of getting rid of a lot of garlic this year...

at the zoo

An outing to the zoo with our pal Gabe (short for Gabriella) her papa Jason and our buddy Sukhi. Gabe is six months younger than Unity and her mama Laurel and I met when I was at the end of my pregnancy and she was at the beginning of hers. Gabe and Unity had fun and even rode in each others strollers.

more vacation shots...

We are home safe and sound from the road trip. We got to spend some lovely time in Davis and we also got the chance to see Bruin in the Bay Area. Unity is glad to be out of the car, as are we.

Vacation

We're on vacation. We are visiting Aunt Kristine, Uncle Patrick, Frankie and Amy in Davis, CA for the weekend. We stopped in Southern Oregon to visit our friend Avram on his garlic farm. Here are some pictures:
