No Rosie

We are lucky in many ways to have found the preschool that both kids have attended. The staff is amazing, very nurturing and creative and I've always felt good about leaving my kids in their care. One of the teachers is a singer/songwriter and for the past three years she has written small musicals based on kids books, for the kids to perform. This year's musical was called "No Rosie" based on the book Rosie Revere, Engineer. 

The kids love learning the songs and sing them constantly. When they get up on stage, some of them take it very seriously and concentrate on getting the words right. Some of them just let loose and dance all over the place. It is beyond charming to watch. 

As our five years at this school draw to a close, I am so appreciative of all the wonderful things our whole family has gained from being there.

                           One of Brixton's preschool teachers is a singer/songwriter and she writes musicals for the kids based on classic children's books. This year she wrote music for Where the Wild Things Are and the kids performed it. Brixton has loved listening and learning the music and sings it all the time, with the appropriate facial expressions. The songs are really catchy too, they get stuck in my head constantly.
We feel really lucky that Brixton gets to hang out with such creative people.

This weekend Chris and Unity visited the math store and got a new book. They decided together that the math homework she gets from school wasn't quite enough and they wanted to do more together. They found a workbook that has problems similar to the ones she's doing in school and they've been working on it every day. She is excited about it, it helps that it's a special thing she can do with Dad and he can share how fun it is for him. 

We got one of our seed orders in and daydreaming about Spring can officially begin. 

And Brixton was working on his music of course. His drum teacher uses an approach where each rhythm has the name of a different animal. Brixton will sing/chant the animal names and try to write his own rhythms. Again, he is really excited about this. 

I know it sounds like we are trying to run a Lil Genius factory over here but it's fun to watch them exploring their passions and getting totally sucked in to their practice/play.

This long weekend

This weekend was pretty busy.

                        Swim lessons and farmers market and date night.

                            Haircuts and beach dates and visiting new babies.

                                   And then today we went to the Folklife Music Festival and heard several of Seattle's great kindie bands: Johnny Bregar, the Board of Education, Harmonica Pocket and everyone's favorite, Caspar Babypants!
                                   

                            We were there with a ton of our friends and neighbors, as well as everyone else in Seattle who has kids.

Music

Music class is the highlight of Brixton's week but I usually don't have picutres of it cause we're too busy rocking out. But the kids were all piled up together looking cute and then I remembered the camera in my purse. So here's some action shots of our musical tots.

Things have been kind of quiet around here lately. We're still reeling from all the global catastrophe ( I don't know how you hold an entire country in the light but I'm trying) and riding another wave of minor yet annoying illnesses in our family. So, we haven't been going out much and we've been trying not to share our germs with our friends. Chris stayed home from work today to help me out ( thank gracious!) and he and Brixton bonded over some Black Sabbath. Then you have Unity and Brixton, where B is making his "cheese" face, and siblings sharing secrets at the breakfast table. Brixton looks pretty blase so Unity's secret must not be that scandalous.

singer/songwriter

There's been a lot of buzz these days about the debut album from singer/songwriter Unity Jayjee. The album, titled "Rain in My Hair" contains both haunting melodic ballads as well a few catchy sing-along tunes. This young ukulele player seems to be gathering a following already. Try to catch her on tour this fall.
